Why Uttarakhand temple panels want non-Hindus barred

A proposal to bar non-Hindus from three of Uttarakhand’s most revered shrines — Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri — is expected to be formally cleared in the coming days, temple committee officials have said. The move signals a decisive tightening of access rules at the heart of Char Dham, one of India’s most popular pilgrimage circuits.
While the Gangotri Temple Committee has already announced a ban on entry of non-Hindus, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) says it has arrived at a broad consensus among saints and local stakeholders, and will place the proposal before its board for approval. Only the Yamunotri Temple Committee has not yet finalised its position, leaving open, for now, whether the entire Char Dham circuit will operate under a uniform rule.
