Russian oil is a no-go for Indian refineries, can Venezuela be the alternative?


Whenever petrol prices rise in India, nobody needs a reminder. The pinch is felt everywhere — at the fuel pump first, then on the bus ticket, and soon enough in the price of tomatoes in the kitchen. That’s why India is forever scanning the globe for affordable oil, importing nearly 89% of what it needs. For the past few years, Russia has played the role of the reliable bargain supplier. Now, as Russian oil becomes harder to come by, a new name has entered the conversation: Venezuela. It’s an unexpected guest. After all, Venezuela is better known for empty shelves and political drama than for rescuing other countries’ energy needs. But beneath all that turmoil lies a staggering treasure — about 303 billion barrels of oil, the largest reserves on the planet.
